Collection: Agave

A family of succulent plants characterized by densely fibrous leaves containing juices that enable the plant to survive long periods of drought. Upon maturity the leaf juices get sucked into the core of the plant, get converted to a high sugar syrup that is fed through a very tall flower stalk to supply nectar to many hundreds of flowers mounted on bracts. Because the resources used to produce the stalk and flowers is so draining on the plant, it only flowers once. However, reproduction occurs from offsets, bulbils attached to the flower stalks, and/or seed.

Of the hundreds of species of Agaves from North, Central and South America sizes range from seven inches (20 cm) wide Agave arizonica to several meters of the Agave salmiana ferox.
